Resident Evil: Afterlife Trailer Premieres at WonderCon
Source: Edward Douglas April 3, 2010

Director Paul W.S. Anderson and actresses Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter were on-hand in San Francisco at the Metreon for the World Premiere of the teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife, the first chance for anyone to see it before their WonderCon panel on Saturday.

The packed house was full of excited fans who answered trivia questions for prizes from Capcom before Anderson came out to introduce the footage, the lights dimmed and away we went:

The trailer starts with an airplane flying over a beach, and then we cut to seemingly the same plane flying over snow-covered mountains (most likely in Alaska), and then it flies over an unidentified city that's in ruins, smoke pouring up from the destroyed buildings. In the next shot we see what's left of the "Hollywood" sign making it more obvious what city we were seeing in the previous shots.

Then we see a long shot of Alice walking along a beach away from a helicopter, and there's another shot of someone else jumping off an airplane in an airfield full of planes, plus a quick shot of a guy ducking as an airplane flies over him, one of the wings just brushing the top of his head.

Alice's voice-over, the only talking in the trailer, gave the opening a bit of an I Am Legend vibe, and it went something like this:

"Five years ago, a virus escaped and everybody died. If you're out there, there is hope. My name is Alice..."

At that last bit, we see the first frontal shot of Milla from the upper torso up. Alice is no longer wearing the trademark red dress, now dressed much sleeker than we've seen her, all in black leather with her hair cut much closer to the head. It's a very different look Alice for sure, and it cuts to an action shot of her throwing knives directly towards the camera, something which really popped in 3D.

The titles, which went by quickly, mainly hyped up the fact that the movie was filmed in 3D using James Cameron and Vince Pace's patented 3D camera system that they used for Avatar, something Anderson would discuss afterwards.

We then get our first look at Shawn Roberts as the film's main baddie Albert Wesker, wearing dark glasses sitting on a throne-like dias in an all-white room surrounded by guards, and in the next scene he throws the glasses towards the camera--the recent photo of the glasses with Claire and her brother Chris, played by Wentworth Miller from "Prison Break," in the reflection was taken from that sequence. It didn't seem like we saw much of Chris as the footage whizzed by though that may have been him ducking under the plane.

For the most part, the trailer is made up of a lot of shots of Alice and/or Claire in action, Alice either wielding her dual revolvers or her two katana swords. In one shot, she is running towards a group of armed guards, unsheathing her swords and slicing through them. The first scene we see of Alice and Ali Larter's Claire together, they look almost like twin sisters, and Alice is holding one of the revolvers pointed towards something off-camera. (This was in one of the photos that premiered last week.) Much of the footage seemed to be in whatever location that was with lots of white backgrounds, which really made the ladies in black stand out.

We don't see that many of the actual infected "zombies" in the trailer, but we do see one shot of Alice jumping over a wall followed by dozens of the creatures. We also see a close-up shot of one of the infected, which looks similar to the Majini in "Resident Evil 5," with the bottom half of its jaw replaced by a four-way mandible, similar to the Predator or the Reavers from Blade 2.

We did get a few more clips from what looks like one of the big "boss fights" of the movie, what seemed to be Claire--her and Alice REALLY look a lot alike now--fighting a creature that looks a lot like the Executioner Majini from "RE5," a giant hooded creature with a huge axe that is using the hammer-end of it to smash through walls as she ducks to avoid being struck.

The big money shot began with Wesker and his guards shooting at Alice and Claire as they crash through a window backwards while shooting and falling in slow motion--very similar to the Trinity shot in The Matrix Reloaded in fact--but then we see what looks like the two of them plummeting, almost in freefall through the area between buildings. After the title flashes on screen, the trailer ends with a quick shot of Alice throwing or shooting something.

The footage looked great, really focusing on the action and the creatures and not wasting a lot of time with talking or laying out the story, although there was a lot of shots in there for fans of the games. Needless to say, the 3D looked fantastic, really smooth and not at all forced or belabored, especially impressive in the opening shots and some of the action scenes. Couldn't tell what the rock music playing was, but it sounded like Filter or Linkin Park, though what band doesn't sound like one of those two these days?

After the footage, the trio answered questions about the movie, Milla really being at her rowdiest having just got off the plane from Los Angeles. When asked by the moderator, some local radio DJ, why she kept coming back to do "Resident Evil," she said that it was her brother's favorite video game, and she compared doing the movies to going on a wild Disneyland ride. When asked what made the series so popular, Anderson answered facetiously, "hot girls with big guns."

He also talked about how he told Sony about wanting to make the fourth movie more epic, trekking around to shoot it in locations like Los Angeles, Tokyo and Alaska, and the studio seemed game to spend more money rather than hacking out the fourth installment, which is often the case. The decision to make the movie in 3D came about after Anderson was shown early footage of Avatar from James Cameron that blew him away, and he compared shooting in 3D to the conversion process like comparing "Don Perignon to paint thinner" being that "both get you wasted" but one is clearly superior. Milla made an inadvertently raunchy joke about the process they used being "a lot harder and a lot longer" which got a lot of guffaws.

Ali added that the movie is the closest to the video games, the influence of the recent "Resident Evil 5" clearly inspiring Anderson on his return to directing, and she said that Anderson brought in a lot of direct shots from the games, including one scene Ali does that is directly from the game. Milla "accidentally" let slip out that she has a fight sequence with Ali Larter as well, but are they fighting each other? Or just fighting something else together? Larter also talked about how the introduction of Claire's brother Chris also brings another dimension to her character.

The teaser trailer will be online at 2:15pm Pacific Time on Saturday.
Resident Evil: Afterlife opens everywhere in 3D (and 2D) on September 10.

Using this exciting new technology makes staging the action a bigger challenge than usual, as actor Wentworth Miller points out: "I'm happy to be on this set, learning how to do fight choreography in a new way, because we're using 3D technology that does not allow you to sell a fake punch; the camera will actually see around the corner, see that you're not connecting with anything physical, so you have to re-work the way you're approaching the sequence."

We're caught up with behind the camera - what's going on in front of it this time around? Obviously, I can only tell you what I was privy to, as the producers were still very cagey with divulging their plot. As you probably know by now, returning to action is Claire Redfield, once again played by Ali Larter (pictured above in a pose from RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION). "I guess people liked me as her," Larter says. "I'm excited that they brought me back. I love working with Milla, and it's also very excited to have Paul back directing this... To work with the man who really created this world and this vision... was what excited me about joining this next installment."
Redfield's brother, Chris, is finally introduced in the human form of Wentworth Miller, best known for his role on television's "Prison Break
". (For those unfamiliar with the canon, Chris was the main character in the first "Resident Evil" game, but has never made an appearance in a film until now.) Miller says, "It quickly became evident that there's a huge Chris Redfield fanbase out there, that's he's near and dear to a lot of people, and that there was kind of an appetite for his appearance in the movies..." Miller seems up for the challenge of portraying an iconic video game character, but is also careful to note that it'll be his Chris Redfield. "All I can do is bring my own specific Chris Redfield to the table. I can't give you want you want, I can only give you what I do."
However, Miller is quite grateful to hop on this runaway locomotive. "In certain respects I feel a little like a dinner guest who's gotten to the dinner party quite late, but that doesn't mean they haven't made a nice place for me at the table."

Larter, speaking about the addition of her fictional brother, says "I think that one of the great things about this movie is they're bringing in another level of depth and dimension by bringing in this human relationship, this brother-sisterly thing. I think a lot of people are going to relate to that."
I didn't get to see Wentworth or Ali kick butt on set. In fact, I didn't see a whole lot - that I can really tell you about, anyway. I can say that the set we were exposed to was called the "Arcadia Lab", one of the film's largest set-pieces. It's also part of the lair of the villainous "Wesker", RESIDENT EVIL's big bad guy, played this time around by Shawn Roberts. Wesker runs the Umbrella Corporation from a large boat floating off the coast of Alaska, and what we were seeing was Alice's infiltration on the boat - obviously a sequence in the film's last act.

Wentworth Miller On Set Interview RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE

Last November, I got to visit the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife when the movie was filming in Toronto. I was there with a few other online journalists and we got to watch some filming and also interview the cast. Overall it was a great set visit and you can read my report here. Anyway, late in the day we got to sit down with Wentworth Miller to talk about playing Chris Redfield. He told us what he did to prepare for the movie, the kind of research he did online, and how his character is different than the video game. While the interview wasn’t a long one, it was very informative. Hit the jump to read or listen to it:

As always, you can either read the transcript below or listen to the audio. And if you haven’t seen the trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife yet, I’d watch it first.

Question: Ali was saying you’d never shot a gun before, but didn’t you shoot a gun on Prison Break?

Miller: You know, if I had to boil it down, that’s the critical difference between Michael Schoefield and Chris Redfield. Chris can actually pull the trigger. Michael was never allowed to.

Q: So he never actually pulled the trigger?

Miller: He pointed guns at people but the powers that be felt for him to actually shoot another character, it would force him too far into the dark side and the balance of good and evil on that show was pretty precarious to begin with.

Q: So you’re under the spotlight this time. Fans have been looking for Chris Redfield for the last three films. How daunting is that and tell us about your Chris versus the video game Chris.

Miller: That’s a good question. A lot of different responses come to mind. They say that ignorance is bliss and I think the good news is that I went into this very much a clean slate. I hadn’t seen any of the movies, had never played the video games. I remembered, specifically the trailer, for the third movie because of that great shot of Vegas buried in the sand dunes. That was pretty iconic. But I’d never heard the name Chris Redfield before. I was quickly made aware that there was a rather large fan base out there for the movies and for the video games and this character held a special place in a lot of people’s hearts and minds. So I wanted, of course, to proceed with respect. The first thing I didn’t do is Google Chris Redfield because I didn’t just want to dive into the mass of what’s out there. But I did Google his images and we to a lot of different fan sites to see who Chris Redfield was, what images were popular and circulating. And I thought, “Wow, if what I’m seeing is an accurate representation this guy is right out of the WWF.” (Laughs) His arms are like the size of tree trunks. Four weeks to prepare for this movie. That’s not gonna happen. And then I went to the video games. I had the powers that be splice together a number of pivotal scenes, particularly from the first installment. I thought, “Wait a minute, that’s not quite the character that I’m seeing on my…” That Chris Redfield is maybe more accurately described as the “before” Chris Redfield. A little bit slimmer, but not only is there a physical difference there, aside from being clearly heroic and someone who can handle his business, there’s also something very sort of innocent about him as well. He’s still kind of freshly scrubbed in a way. So I had the images I saw online, I had what I saw in the video games and then of course I had Paul’s script. Paul’s, of course, the fountainhead as far as I’m concerned so I had to honor his Chris Redfield [and] assume my place in this particular universe and the Chris Redfield that he introduces is not only someone who’s been through a lot of serious crap, but is not emerging from a particularly dire set of circumstances. So I had to figure out how to make all of these different influences work and marry that with what I bring as an actor to the table. It has to be, in a sense, at the end of the day, my Chris Redfield. At the same time the fans very specifically had their say because when I got an email from the wardrobe department, they’re like, “Listen, we’re trying to come up with Chris Redfield’s gear, his sort of iconic look and we’re open to any suggestions.” I said, “Well, here are these images I found online. Let’s harvest from what’s already there.” So as far as what we came up with, it’s very much representative of a lot of those online influences.

Q: How close did you get to those arms like tree trunks?

Miller: Still working on it. I’ll let you know in Resident Evil 5?

Q: So what is that look and what does your outfit look like?

Miller: I guess this sort of thing I can probably tiptoe into. There’s already the paparazzi shots of us walking back and forth across the street to set. He’s got grey military fatigues. We paid particular attention to his, what we call his gack. The knee pad, the belts, the sword, the back gear. The plate, the little flashlight on the belt that our prop master geeks out over every time he sees. That’s where we tried to get as specific as possible.

Q: Did you do sword training?

Miller: No sword training for this movie unfortunately. Something to look forward to.

Q: Have you heard about how popular this franchise is in Japan and other areas?

Miller: Absolutely.

Q: Is it something that excites you and you’ve also mentioned the paparazzi taking pictures. Set photos are leaking more and more. Is that something you are made aware of?

Miller: It’s something I was aware of thanks to my experience in Prison Break, which was a hit in the U.S. but a modest hit. Overseas, however, it became kind of this international phenomenon. At one point we had 135 million Chinese fans downloading the show every single week, which is a mind-blowing number. As far as we were concerned, we weren’t just making Prison Break for a domestic audience. We were making it for an international audience. That’s the new playing field as far as we were concerned. So to be a part of something like Resident Evil which is, now it’s been out there for about ten years and has this amazing overseas fan base, felt a little bit to me like a really advantageous move, not just from the creative side because Chris Redfield is a fantastic character obviously, a significant part of this mythology… It was also a way for me personally as an actor to keep sending my work out there to the broadest fan base possible, to continue to reach fans overseas that knew me from Prison Break, liked me from Prison Break and were curious as to what I’d do next.

Q: Can you talk about some of the big crazy stunts or fights or wirework you’ve done for this film?

Miller: We are in the middle of putting together, as I’m sure you’ve seen, this incredible fight sequence at the end of the film. And one of the complications I guess that the 3-D technology’s brought to the table is that, when you’re watching through that medium it’s as though you can see around the corner, so when you’re trying to put together your fight choreography, if a hit doesn’t land, the audience will be able to tell. So that told, in preparation for shooting my part in the sequence, is that there may be moments from before they yell “action” where I have to actually put my face on Shawn Roberts fist, wait for them to yell action and then react as though I’ve just been cracked in the jaw, which is very different way of doing things for me coming from a different kind of technology in TV specifically, so I’m looking forward to adding that to my tool belt.

Q: What does Chris Redfield bring to the Resident Evil ensemble?

Miller: I think that, obviously a franchise like Resident Evil serves its purpose in terms of providing kick ass chills, spills and thrills. At the same time, if you haven’t invested in the characters on screen, when they get picked off it’s like fire over the sky. It’s brilliant but meaningless, and I think Chris and Claire, together, bring something particularly special and significant because they represent.

(The unit publicist whispers “Stop Talking.”)

Miller: They represent, obviously, a familial bond, which is something that everyone in the audience can relate to, get, and invest in. So in and amongst the gunfights and the zombies and the madness, here are two characters with a clearly understandable and identifiable relationship that the audience can go, “I know that, I understand that and I’m rooting for these two on that level.”
